Caherduggan Castle still stands beside the ghost of a considerable village that plague emptied before desertion completed the work. The loss transformed a busy place into a vacant field, leaving behind only memory and the castle as a marker for what vanished.

This medieval deserted settlement was referred to in the 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork - vol. 4 North Cork' (2000, 509) under the entry (no. 14291) for an unclassified castle (CO025-012001-). The reference to the settlement in the entry reads: 'Down Survey (1655-6) barony map shows castle here with mill to S and there are traditions relating to a settlement (CO025-153----) here'. According to Lewis (1837, vol. 1, 241), there was a 'considerable village' near Caherduggan Castle (CO025-01201-), 'which tradition says was nearly depopulated by a plague and subsequently deserted.'
