Settlement cluster in Gaulstown (fassadinin By.)

Settlement cluster

What is recorded here

Gaulstown castle vanished into a field named Old Street, leaving behind only grouted masonry and faint foundation marks. The name itself preserves the memory of a busy place, perhaps a small settlement clustered around the castle before forgetting swallowed it. There is a temptation to walk that field at dusk and expect cobblestones under the grass, but the earth keeps its own counsel. What remains is a suggestion rather than a fact, a ghost of streets recorded in a field name instead of stone.
Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 455) notes that, 'of Gaulstown castle, which stood in a field named the "Old Street", nothing remains but a small fragment of grouted masonry and some traces of foundation. The name of the field suggests the former presence of a settlement, perhaps associated with the castle (KK011-02002-). The precise location of both the castle and the possible settlement are unknown.
