Settlement cluster in Castlehill (tirawley By., Crossmolina. Par.)

Settlement cluster

What is recorded here

Castlehill held six houses in its northwest corner when a Trustees Survey measured the estate in 1701. They vanished from later memory, perhaps swallowed by peat cuts or abandoned when estate borders shifted. Whatever erased them, the survey caught them at the moment they existed: six roofs, six hearths, six families stubborn enough to be counted.
This record refers to a cluster of six houses shown in the NW part of Castlehill townland on a 1701 ‘Trustees Survey’ estate map (NLI microfilm n. 645, p. 31). The exact location of the houses is unknown. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 15 August 2019
