Séipéal Banríon Mhuire gan Smál [Catholic Church of Mary Immaculate Queen]

Freestanding limestone monument to Lynch family, erected 1857, standing to front of St James's Catholic Church. Comprises rectangular box-tomb having chamfered pilasters to corners and to middle of long sides and flanking elliptical-arched recesses, plinth, moulded cornice to flat top in turn supporting flat slab on top of which stands square-plan pinnacle. Pinnacle comprises plinth with moulded base and cornice, having raised plaques to each face, tapering saint's bell-shaped device above, scroll device above and supporting openwork top having carved crosses to each face. South face of box-tomb has coat of arms and heraldic motif. Plaque to front face of plinth dedicates monument to Betsy Lynch, wife of Nicholas who died at Barna House in 1857. Other plaques dedictaed to other family members.

This fine limestone memorial is a landmark on the road to the west of Barna village. It is unusual for combining various apparently disparate elements to form a rather complicated monument. The detailing of the box-tomb, the plaques and the topmost element are all of artistic interest and the inscriptions contribute to local social history.
