Saint Luke's Church

Freestanding Church of Ireland church, having two-bay nave and shallow chancel, all built 1814-15, with some work done as 1859, as per date to wind vane, and earlier possibly seventeenth-century two-stage tower to west. Incorporating fabric of earlier building. Pitched slate roofs to nave and chancel, with cut-stone copings having carved kneelers, and steeply hipped slate roof to tower with patterned slates, gabled vent dormers with timber louvers, cast-iron finial cresting and wind vane incorporating date. Ashlar sandstone walls to nave and chancel, with buttresses to ends and middle of nave elevations, with cut-stone plinth course. Rubble stone walling to tower, with battered plinth. Paired pointed arch windows to nave, with chamfered limestone block-and-start surrounds with quarry-glazed two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows. Triple-light window to chancel having pointed-arched lights with stained-glass windows. Pointed arch window openings to top stage of tower, having limestone block-and-start surrounds and timber louvers. South elevation of tower has pointed arch window opening with chamfered limestone surround and cast-iron lattice glazing. Pointed arch door opening to tower, having chamfered limestone head, roughly dressed stone voussoirs, timber battened door and limestone threshold and step. Some elaborate gravestones to surrounding graveyard. Square-profile dressed sandstone piers with recent double-leaf cast-iron gates. Sandstone boundary walls to site.

The church is particularly well designed and fine quality materials have been used throughout, indicative of the quality of nineteenth-century craftsmanship. It incorporates an earlier tower and the date to the wind vane appears to relate to some relatively late work to the building. The roof to the tower retains its patterned tiles and wind vane with a date, which adds further interest to the structure. The graveyard contains some elaborate monuments and its boundary retains its solidly constructed piers and boundary walls. Prominently sited, the church is a local landmark in the area.
