Saint Lawrence's Catholic Church

Detached three-bay two-storey parochial house, extant 1896, on a T-shaped plan centred on single-bay two-storey projecting breakfront; two-bay two-storey side elevations. Occupied, 1901; 1911. Refenestrated, ----. Hipped slate roof on a T-shaped plan centred on hipped slate roof (breakfront), clay ridge tiles, paired rendered central chimney stacks having stringcourses below concrete capping supporting terracotta pots, and replacement uPVC rainwater goods on slightly overhanging timber boarded eaves retaining cast-iron downpipes. Rendered walls on rendered chamfered plinth. Square-headed window openings with cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings framing replacement uPVC casement windows replacing four-over-four timber sash windows. Interior including (ground floor): vestibule; square-headed door opening into hall with timber doorcase including pilasters supporting shallow cornice on blind frieze framing timber panelled door having overlight; hall retaining carved timber surrounds to door openings framing timber panelled doors; and carved timber surrounds to door openings to remainder framing timber panelled doors with carved timber surrounds to window openings framing timber panelled shutters. Set in relandscaped grounds shared with Saint Lawrence's Catholic Church.

A parochial house representing an important component of the built heritage of County Wexford with the architectural value of the composition confirmed by such attributes as the compact plan form centred on an expressed breakfront; the slight diminishing in scale of the openings on each floor producing a feint graduated visual impression; and the high pitched roof. Having been well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric, both to the exterior and to the interior: however, the introduction of replacement fittings to most of the openings has not had a beneficial impact on the character or integrity of a parochial house forming part of a self-contained group alongside the adjacent Saint Lawrence's Catholic Church (see 15703706) with the resulting ecclesiastical ensemble making a pleasing visual statement in a rural village setting.
