Saint Augustine's Abbey in Canterbury was founded in 598 AD by Augustine of Canterbury, the first Archbishop of Canterbury, and played a key role in the Christianization of Anglo-Saxon England. It is important as a major religious and cultural centre and as the site of the original cathedral that preceded Canterbury Cathedral.
