Ruthwell Cross

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Ruthwell Cross as Cross (anglian), Rune Inscribed Stone (anglian). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Ruthwell Cross dates to the 8th or 9th century and is an Anglo-Saxon high cross, notable for its Christian carvings and a runic inscription in Old Norse, suggesting a connection with Viking activity in southern Scotland. It may have served as a religious monument or a marker of territorial or cultural significance.
