Rosina Bulwer Lytton was born in County Limerick in 1802, the daughter of a women's rights advocate and an Anglo-Irish landowner. She married Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1827, but their union collapsed into legal separation, stolen children, and his false claim that she was insane. She fought back with novels that caricatured him and public denunciations at his election events, refusing to disappear into the asylum he sought to build around her.
