Rosalind Franklin was a pioneering chemist and X-ray crystallographer whose critical X-ray diffraction images of DNA were essential to James Watson and Francis Crick's discovery of the DNA double helix structure. Her work also significantly advanced the understanding of the molecular structures of viruses.
