Rock art in Neesha stands on a SE-facing spur of Macklaun Mountain in County Kerry, Ireland, overlooking the Meelagh River valley and distant Carrauntoohill. A smooth sandstone boulder bears about eighteen small pickmarks and one shallow cupmark, marks small enough to hide in palm shadow yet clear enough to count. Whoever struck that stone worked high above the valley floor, perhaps marking a boundary, a gift, or a memory now lost. The mountains still frame the spot, keeping the gesture company long after the hand has gone.

In mountain heath (257m OD), on SE-facing spur of Macklaun Mountain, overlooking valley of Meelagh River to S and SE. Excellent views of surrounding landscape, particularly along valley to Caragh Lake at NE and the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and Carrauntoohill to ENE. A smooth and fractured sandstone boulder (dims. 1.65m N-S; 1.32m E-W; H 0.66m at S) which is subrectangular in plan. It has an irregular decorated surface (dims. 0.14m N-S; 0.35m E-W) which has a very gentle E-facing aspect. The decorated surface bears a very clear cluster (dims. 0.14m N-S; 0.35m E-W) of approximately eighteen pickmarks (average diam. 5-7mm; D 2mm) located at S edge of flat rock surface. A shallow cupmark (diam. 5cm; D 3mm) is located at SE edge. A large, circular solution marks is located at E edge and a sod of turf and furze are at W edge of stone’s surface. Likely dating to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, the rock art at Neesha may have held ritual or symbolic significance, possibly linked to landscape features visible from the site such as Caragh Lake. Its position on a prominent mountain spur suggests it may have functioned as a territorial marker, ceremonial focus, or astronomical observation point.
