Rock art in Magheranaul

Rock art

What is recorded here

Don 32 and its neighbour still hold cup marks cut into rock, yet the hand that struck them has disappeared into centuries. The larger cup may have marked a boundary, a offering place or a joke between people who no longer speak. Heather and gorse return every spring, burying the edge of the field and forcing anyone who visits to search rather than read a label. What is recorded is small; what is imagined is endless.
Described by Van Hoek as 'In the same field as DON 32 (DG004-071----) but some distance uphill to the NE is a small outcrop in heather and gorse with at least three cup-marks, one rather large' (Van Hoek 1987, 39). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload/revision: : 30 May 2010
