Rock art in Letter West

Rock art

What is recorded here

Rock art in Letter West carries four cupmarks and one worn cup-and-ring on a fractured sandstone boulder. The markings sit above two shallow steps, facing east across the Behy valley. Any person who chipped them likely stood on that heath, looked toward the distant mountains, and believed the stone could remember what the sky forgot.
n rocky mountain heath (191m), on a NE-facing slope. Excellent views of Behy river valley to NE with Seefin and Droum Mountains in background. A slightly rough and fractured sandstone boulder (dims. 1.8m ENE-WSW; 0.86m NNW-SSE; H 0.65m at SSE) which is subrectangular in plan. It has a subrectangular decorated surface (dims. 0.6m ENE-WSW; 0.47m NNW-SSE) which has an E-facing aspect. The decorated surface bears four cupmarks (largest diam. 6cm; D 2mm) of roughly the same size. A cup-and-ring motif (overall dims. c. 17cm NE-SW; 16cm NW-SE; cup diam. 5cm; D 5mm) is defined by a partial ring (Wth 1.5cm; D 1-2mm) S->W->NW, which is very weathered. The cup-and-ring motif and one cupmark are upon highest area of the stone, at W end of decorated surface. These are separated from the three cupmarks by two steps (long-axis N-S) which extend across the stone’s surface. Compiled by: Alison McQueen and Vera Rahilly Date of upload: 18 July 2017
