What is recorded here
Derrygarrane South preserves cupmarks and partial rings on a fractured sandstone boulder above Kerry bog. The marks are shallow and worn, but they still break the smooth stone surface beside a quiet tributary of Lough Fadda. Whoever cut them worked in open mountain air, making small symbols that rain and time have nearly taken back.
In mountain heath (197m OD), on a gentle N-facing slope, located on N side of a low hillock, overlooking an expanse of bog NW->N->NE. Located on S side of tributary stream of Lough Fadda that flows into Kealduff River; Knocklomena clearly visible to N. A large, smooth and fractured sandstone boulder (dims. 2.30m NW-SE; 1.14m NE-SW; max. H 0.66m at W) which is subrectangular in plan; Two natural fractures (long axis NW-SE and WNW-ESE) across the stone surface. It has an irregular-shaped decorated surface (dims. 1.41m NW-SE; 0.41m NE-SW) having a gentle E-facing aspect. The motifs are very weathered, yet traceable and consist of a cup-and-one-ring motif (overall diam. 12cm; ring Wth 2.5cm; D 3mm; cup diam. 6cm; D 8mm) and a cup-and-partial-ring (overall dims. 12cm x 9cm; ring Wth 2cm; D 3mm; cup diam. 5.5cm; D 8mm). A cupmark (diam. 4cm; D 5mm) is located at NW and a second cupmark (diam. 5cm; D 8mm) is located at S. Two linear grooves, one of which (long-axis NNW-SSE; L 21cm; wth 1-2cm; D 3mm) curves to E at its SE end. A stone wall with post and wire fence on top is located c. 3m to SW and a second post and wire fence is c. 9m to SE.
