Robert Gibbings was born in County Cork, Ireland on 23 March 1889. He grew up in Kinsale, studied medicine at University College Cork, then turned to art and became a leading wood engraver. He served in the Royal Munster Fusiliers, was wounded at Gallipoli, and returned to London to continue his work. In 1920 he helped found the Society of Wood Engravers with Noel Rooke.
