Road

This site, situated near the village of Causeway on the lands of Mr Dillane, Ballinclemesig, was investigated by Col O'Connell in 1939. He reported that 'oak poles had been laid along the track, and, on top of these, oak beams about five feet long, roughly dressed, had been placed. A layer of broken stones completed the road.' It was traceable for about 30m, running in a southerly direction and passing from arable land into bog land. The site was again visited by O'Connell along with Dr Ó Ríordáin about three months later when they decided to do a small excavation. 'After opening up about five feet, we came upon the end of a large bulk of timber' which proved to be a dugout canoe, which fell to pieces when removed. (D B O'Connell, 1939-1951).
