Road

Stretch of partially grass-covered trackway (L c. 1.2km) cut into N-facing slope in tillage. Trackway sloping downwards in an NE–SW trajectory and defined by overgrown drystone walls on either side. It formed part of the old road from Clonakilty to Castlefreke and is indicated on the Grand Jury map of Cork (surveyed 1790s, published 1811), on the First Ed. OS 6-inch map and on all subsequent OS maps. The Earl of Shannon’s Estate Map of 1819 indicates that the route from Clonakilty to Castlefreke at that time was still via Lamb Street and would have most likely included this trackway. It is known locally as the ‘Rocky Road’ due to the surface of the terrain. It is now mainly in use by pedestrians and is designated L-80471-0.
