Road

The site (L 330.85m min.; Wth 4.2m; D 0.6m) is orientated NNW-SSE. At the S end of the site it is composed of widely spaced planks, roundwoods and mixed brushwood, one to four pieces in depth. Most of the timbers and roundwoods are longitudinally laid with some transverses and irregularly laid brushwood. Woodworking is evidenced by tangential, radial and half-split timbers and by metal toolmarks on a piece of brushwood. It lies in moderately humified Sphagnum peat with Eriophorum and unidentified reeds. One of the timbers has been dendrochronologically dated to 1573±9 BC or later (Q10352). Only the three most S sightings retain horizontal elements, the remaining sightings survive only as pegs. Overall, the superstructure of the site survives for a portion of its length (L c. 35m) as longitudinal and transverse planks, roundwoods and brushwood. 15m from the S end it is secured by pegs, set at 45-90° angles. For the remainder of its length it survives as a series of irregularly distributed pegs on the field surface. Some of the pegs (diam. 0.04-0.11m) are split. 135m from the S end of this site it overlaps with a post row, SMR OF018-181----, and these sites are difficult to distinguish from one another at this point.
