Riverine revetment in Gardens (kilkenny City By., St. Canice Par.)

Riverine revetment

What is recorded here

Muddy water and hungry men built the Gardens edge. A wattle fence gave way to a stone wall, then a thick oak beam pulled from another roof, proving the town reused what it could afford to lose. Houses stood beside the new bank, trusting the river to forget the shape of its own hunger.
Series of revetments for reclamation on the N bank of the River Breagagh, Irishtown, 40m NW of the site of the Irishtown Gate (KK019-026001-) on the town wall, excavated (02E1592) by Ian Doyle (Doyle 2004, 278; 2004, unpublished, 20-22; Doyle 2006, 266-8). A post-and-wattle riverside fence succeeded by a 13th century masonry revetment wall (L 5.23m x Wth. 1.05m x H 0.6m) and timber revetment that included an oak baseplate which was a reused roof-timber dated by dendrochronology to AD 1177-8 (Doyle 2004, unpublished, 24). Revetment ran adjacent to medieval timber houses (KK019-026275-) and (KK019-026278-). Compiled by: Cóilín Ó Drisceoil Date of upload: 16 November 2020
