Clear water still touches the limestone flutes beneath the crossing-tower, though no one is certain whether the font left Kyteler’s Inn or has always belonged inside St Francis’ Abbey. Its paired Romanesque ridges and fleur-de-lis mark it as a vessel for beginning life, not merely decorating a room. That uncertainty gives the water an edge: each baptism may also be answering a older church whose name has faded.

Beneath the crossing-tower of St Francis' Abbey (KK019-026101-), Kilkenny. According to Pike (1989, 574) this font was found 'in the old church in Kyteler's Inn, made of limestone, with flutes in Romanesque pairs. Fleur-de-lis in relief on surface.
