Ritual site

Ritual site, holy/saint's stone

What is recorded here

Ritual site is a ritual site (holy or saint's stone) in Annagh (coolavin By.), County Sligo, Ireland. It stands on an altar or penitential station within the west half of Annagh graveyard. The altar top holds a loose jumble of irregular stones and several water-rolled cobbles. Local tradition calls these cobbles praying stones, linking them to similar stones on Inishmurray.
On top of an 'altar' or penitential station (SL046-026002-), within the W half of Annagh graveyard (SL046-026001-). The upper surface of the altar is covered with a loose jumble of stones, mostly irregular but including several water-rolled cobbles. These cobbles are known locally as 'praying stones' (pers. comm. M. A. Timoney) and are similar to the 'Clocha Breacha' (Cursing stones) on Inishmurray island, county Sligo (see Harbison 1991, fig. 37). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008
