Ring-ditch in Kerries West

Ring-ditch

What is recorded here

Two buried rings, one eighteen metres across and the other fifteen, still draw dark lines on infra-red photographs though no ditch remains visible in the Kerries West grass. They sit north-west to south-east, close enough to have touched or shared a boundary, marking a lost human arrangement now hidden beneath ordinary ground.
'Infra red aerial photography (National Coastline Survey) indicates the presence of two possibly conjoined ditched features (KE029-303001-, KE029-303002-) in this area. No trace of the sites is visible on the ground. The features are orientated NW-SE with the slightly smaller example to the north-west. The larger example is circular with an approximate diameter of 18m. The smaller example is again circular with an approximate diameter of 15m. Both buried ditches clearly show as dark lines on the infra red photograph.' Description from ‘The Prehistoric Settlement of the Lee Valley, Tralee, Co. Kerry; A Landscape Perspective’ by Michael Connolly. PhD Thesis UCC 2008 Date of upload: 06 July 2012
