Ring-ditch in Churchtown (forth By., St. Helen's Ed)

Ring-ditch

What is recorded here

Situated on a level landscape. Archaeological testing (05E1303) identified two ring-ditches that are probably prehistoric hut-sites, together with numerous pits, gullies and post-holes (McLoughlin 2006; 2008). Geophysical survey (06R108) over a wider area confirmed the identifications, and other pit features were recorded. A third possible ring-ditch identified in excavation was not detected but this ring-ditch (diam. c. 8m) was recorded through geophysics. It is evident as an arc of a slot-trench SW-NW-NE. Ring-ditch (WX048-154001-) is c. 75m to the NW and ring-ditch (WX048-154002-) is c. 35m to the NE. The area remains undeveloped.
