Ballywalter, County Down, birthplace of General Sir Richard Worsley on 29 May 1923, launched a career that reached command of 1st (British) Corps after wars in the Middle East, Italy and the Malayan Emergency. The small coastal town gave Britain a senior soldier whose judgments shaped three divisions and two brigades. That sudden reach from a Northern Irish shoreline to the heart of the Army makes the place sound larger than its size.
