This blue commemorative plaque records: 1580 1980 This plaque was unveiled by H.R.H. Duke of Gloucester G.C.V.O. on the 21st June 1980 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the granting to the City of Gloucester the status of a port by Royal Charter dated 20th June 1580.
Duke Prince Richard, or more accurately presumed to be Richard, Duke of Gloucester, is not directly commemorated here; rather, his descendant unveiled a plaque marking the 400th anniversary of Gloucester's port status granted by Royal Charter in 1580.
