Rhos Glandenys

Nature reserve

Explorer Tom

Rhos Glandenys near Cross Inn is a small, wet Ceredigion field that refuses to be dull for a single season. One minute you are looking for orchids among rushy grass; the next, a winter bird is lifting out of the water, making two hectares feel improbably busy. The Wildlife Trust describes three patches of wet, species-rich pasture, bordered by mixed hedges and a little scrub woodland. Different levels of wetness let different plants share the site. Southern marsh orchids and heath spotted orchids are among the summer highlights, with ragged robin and devil's-bit scabious adding colour. In the colder months, snipe, woodcock and other birds use the standing water, while smaller birds work through the hedges. There are no laid-out walking paths here. The fields are flat, but the boggy ground will win an argument with smart shoes every time. I have a theory that the snipe are hiding the path markers as a practical joke; in truth, the reserve was never built to behave like a tidy city park. Its appeal is precisely that damp, changeable patchwork, which rewards a slow look rather than a brisk lap. The trust lists free open access through a kissing gate, with a bridge and stile connecting fields across a wetter section. It says the reserve is unsuitable for wheelchairs and has space for only a couple of cars. Keep dogs on a lead, respect the marshy ground and avoid trampling flowers to chase a closer view. Let the wildlife come into focus at its own pace; the best moments here are the ones you almost walk past.

This does not grant access. Check current paths, opening conditions and ownership before entering.
