Religious house

Included under the extents of Irish monastic possessions listed in 1540-41 is the 'Carmelite House of Clonmel' (White 1943, 330). The extent, made at Clonmel on the 15th of January 1541 states that, 'The priory church has from time immemorial been the parish church. There are no superfluous buildings, but all, including the house of the priory, are suitable for the needs of the farmer, and with two gardens and other accommodations cont. ½ acr., and are worth nothing above repairs' (ibid.). Twenty acres of demesne land are also listed (ibid.). The foundation date of this friary is unknown (Gwynn and Hadcock 1988, 288). The location of the friary within the town is also unknown. Lyons (1936, 292) noted that the house (TS083-019006-) on the quays adjacent to Collet's Lane is traditionally associated with the White Friars, though this is not supported by any historical evidence.
