Religious house, Benedictine monks

What is recorded here

Benedictine priory founded here in c. 1202 by William de Burgo, but 'no later record has been found so that it seems probable that the priory failed at or soon after the founders death in 1205' (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 104). Exact location of foundation not known. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
The Benedictine priory at Ardaneer was founded around 1202 by William de Burgo and is believed to have been short-lived, likely failing soon after his death in 1205. Its significance lies in its association with early medieval monastic activity in Ireland, though little else is known of its structure or dedication.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
