The Parnell Monument stands in County Wicklow, honouring Charles Stewart Parnell, who was born in Avondale in 1846 and later became the most powerful voice for Irish Home Rule in the British Parliament. He left a wealthy Protestant family to organise tenant farmers, found the Irish National Land League, and hold the balance of power between rival governments until his personal scandal broke the movement. The monument marks the place where that unlikely rebellion began, not the cemetery where he died young in England.
