Strancally Castle rose around 1827 for John Kiely several kilometres upriver from the medieval fortress that gave the estate its name. The old castle sat on a rock above the River Blackwater, and a dark tradition claimed prisoners were thrown through a hole in the rock before gunpowder split the fortress. The new castle escaped that fate, but it still carries the shadow of the place beneath its beautiful walls.
