Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Walterstown

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are a deception born of ignorance. They are ringforts, human defences built and abandoned before the fairies invented themselves. Walterstown lost its ringfort to progress, but the loss is not mystical. It is ordinary. People built it, lived beside it, broke it open for fields or roads, and stopped remembering. The fairies appear only when the human truth becomes inconvenient.
According to Power (1923, 202) 'traces of a demolished lios' in this townland. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
