What is recorded here
Not lost but gone before, a Purcell wife wrote on her own stone, naming two marriages and one husband across a decade. Ignatius Purcell died in 1794, decades after Margaret Sweetman and the woman called Plunket, while later Purcell lines kept laying daughters and wives beside him at Crumlin. The slab may still stand against the church wall, carrying that much household history in a townland no longer named on the stone.
The precise location of the 17th century graveslab/tombstone of Ignatius Purcell and his family in Crumlin graveyard (DU018-038002-) has not been identified (Ball 1906, 145). Inscription recorded by C. Hunt and Celia Ewald as follows; '"IGN PURCELL ESQa HIS BURIALL PLACE. HIS FIRST WIFE MARGARET PURCELL ALIAS SWEETMAN DIED THE 13TH OF JUNE 1682.
