Merrion Castle probably kept its own fish in the d-shaped basin where the earthwork still curves beside the shore. Barker drew that unusual enclosed water in 1862, and the older survey named it a serpentine Fish Pond. It is easy to imagine servants casting bread there, children watching silver shapes turn beneath the surface, and the castle keeping even its feasts tied to the land.

Situated along the shore, just south of, and probably associated with, Merrion Castle. On Barker's 'A Map of Old Merrion and Simmonscourt' of 1862 (NAI MSS. 211/2/2/2) an unusual feature is depicted as a d-shaped enclosure bound by a curving earthwork with one edge defined by the shore.
