Cross-slab in Unknown

Recorded by Lionard (1961, 108, Fig. 8.3), who attributed it to ‘Aran Mór’, this roughly subrectangular cross-slab with a slightly rounded top bears a two-line Latin cross with opened-ended arms and top; the base is closed by a gently rounded line. A small circular area at the junction of the arms and shaft probably represents a sunken area (Higgins 1987, vol. II, 320, no. 46). It has not been located. Dated to the early medieval period, likely between the 8th and 10th centuries, the cross-slab may have served a Christian commemorative or instructional function. Its design reflects the Insular artistic tradition, possibly associated with early monastic or ecclesiastical activity in the region.
