Indicated is a crannog in County Clare, Ireland. It is an artificial island, usually built of stone, wood and soil, raised above wet land so people could live, keep animals or store what mattered when flooding threatened ordinary fields. The name gives no further detail, but the form does: a small place made deliberately visible, perhaps marked for others or protected from water.
