Nenagh Castle is the best surviving cylindrical keep in Ireland, a thirty-metre limestone drum built around 1200 by Theobald FitzWalter for the Butler family. King William’s forces destroyed the surrounding curtain walls in 1692, leaving only the round tower and scattered gateway fragments to mark the lost five-sided courtyard. Bishop Michael Flannery added the upper parapet around 1860, completing the silhouette that still dominates the grassy parkland.
