Mud and fire erased most of the castle in 1740, but James Butler, 4th Earl of Ormond, had shaped it into a defensible presence decades earlier. The remaining stones sit at the western edge of Templemore Park, half-swallowed by oak, beech and chestnut, as if the land took the castle back after people stopped watching it. A trail laid out in 2014 now leads visitors from those quiet ruins into the historic heart of Templemore, turning a lost fortress into a walking memory.
