What is recorded here
Ancient Grave is a long cist buried inside a Clare cairn, its narrow chamber barely wide enough for a outstretched body. T.J. Westropp saw more of it in 1905, including a complete north slab and end pieces, but time has taken much of that back. What remains is a sharp stone edge, a broken fragment and loose flags near the NE corner, all of which suggest a deliberate box rather than a random pile. Someone built it, fitted it and walked away; the dead went in, the living stopped coming, and the field forgot the name.
Situated to SE of centre of a cairn (CL010-064007-). This cist (est. 2.1m E-W; c. 0.85m N-S) is defined by a single long slab (L 2m; H 0.2m) on the S side, and a fragment of a smaller slab at the E end of the N side (indicating an internal width of 0.6m for the cist). Several loose flagstones outside the NE corner are possibly related. Westropp (1905, 218; 214, Fig. 5) found the cist in a better state of preservation, recording a complete N slab (L 1.57m) and smaller slabs lining the E and W ends. De Valera and Ó Nualláin (1961, 94) described this as a long cist.
