Farnogue

Detached three-bay two-storey house, built 1860, on a T-shaped plan centred on single-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting glazed porch to ground floor. Occupied, 1901; 1911. Sold, 1916. Sold, 1956. Hipped slate roof with ridge tiles, paired rendered central chimney stacks having rendered capping supporting terracotta or yellow terracotta octagonal pots, and replacement uPVC rainwater goods on slightly overhanging rendered eaves having dentil consoles. Gritdashed roughcast walls on rendered plinth with rendered "bas-relief" strips to corners; slate hung surface finish to side (west) elevation. Square-headed central door opening into house with rendered surround having moulded reveals framing replacement glazed uPVC double doors having overlight. Square-headed window openings (ground floor) with cut-granite sills, timber cruciform mullions, and rendered "bas-relief" surrounds having chamfered reveals with hood mouldings framing timber casement windows. Square-headed window openings (first floor) with cut-granite sills, timber mullions, and rendered "bas-relief" surrounds having chamfered reveals framing timber casement windows. Interior including (ground floor): central hall retaining encaustic tiled floor, carved timber surrounds to door openings framing timber panelled doors, moulded plasterwork cornice to ceiling, staircase on a dog leg plan with turned timber balusters supporting carved timber banister terminating in turned timber newel, carved timber surrounds to door openings to landing framing timber panelled doors, and moulded plasterwork cornice to ceiling; reception room (east) retaining carved timber surround to door opening framing timber panelled door with carved timber surrounds to window openings framing timber panelled shutters, Classical-style chimneypiece, and picture railing below moulded plasterwork cornice to ceiling; reception room (west) retaining carved timber surround to door opening framing timber panelled door with carved timber surrounds to window openings framing timber panelled shutters, and moulded plasterwork cornice to ceiling; and carved timber surrounds to door openings to remainder framing timber panelled doors with carved timber surrounds to window openings framing timber panelled shutters. Set in landscaped grounds with cast-iron chamfered piers to perimeter having finial-topped capping supporting cast-iron double gates.

A house erected by Thomas Pettigrew (d. 1890) representing an integral component of the mid nineteenth-century domestic built heritage of Wexford with the architectural value of the composition suggested by such attributes as the deliberate alignment maximising on scenic vistas overlooking rolling grounds with the River Slaney estuary as a backdrop; the compact plan form centred on an expressed porch; the diminishing in scale of the openings on each floor producing a graduated visual impression; and the slightly oversailing roofline. Having been well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric, both to the exterior and to the interior, including a partial slate hung surface finish widely regarded as an increasingly endangered hallmark of the architectural heritage of County Wexford: meanwhile, encaustic tile work; contemporary joinery; restrained chimneypieces; and sleek plasterwork refinements, all highlight the artistic potential of a house having subsequent connections with the Cornock family including John Hawkes Cornock JP (1842-1916) 'formerly of Cromwell's Fort [see 15508001] and late of Farnogue House County Wexford' (Calendars of Wills and Administrations 1916, 119).
