Standing stone in Derryduff (ibane and Barryroe By.)

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Derryduff in County Cork holds a rectangular standing stone, two metres thirty tall, aligned east-north-east to west-south-west atop a pasture hillock. That is all the facts give it: a block of rock, a grassy ridge, a direction it faces. Whether people ever gathered there, marked a boundary, honored a dead person or simply noticed how the light struck its edge at a certain hour, the stone still performs that old job of holding attention. It stands because someone set it or left it standing, and the land has kept the shape ever since.
In pasture atop hillock. Rectangular stone aligned ENE-WSW (H 2.3m; 0.85m x 0.75m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
