King Henry II of England and King Edward I of England both wanted Dinefwr Castle, yet Rhys ap Gruffydd, Maredudd ap Rhys and Rhys ap Maredudd shaped its fate. The castle stood as the chief seat of the Dinefwr dynasty in the Kingdom of Deheubarth, overlooking the River Towy near Llandeilo. Its towers rose above a valley where loyalty changed hands as often as armies marched, and promises broken blood spilled.
