Maredudd ap Rhys, Rhys Fychan and Rhys ap Maredudd lost or held Dinefwr while Llywelyn the Last arranged those claims, but Edward I broke his promise and had Rhys ap Maredudd executed in 1291. The castle stands above the Towy with a hundred-foot drop, a spiral tower, garderobes and a restored entrance, while the surrounding estate belongs to the National Trust and the woods to the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales.
