Cross in Sceilg Mhichíl

This cross formerly (L 0.4m x Wth 0.34m x T 0.04m) stood on a leacht (KE104A001103-) at the inner end of the entrance passage to the main terrace (KE104A001105-) on Sceilg Mhichíl. Its head and both arms are damaged (O'Sullivan and Sheehan 1996, 290, no. 948 (76)). This cross has been allocated the SMR number KE066-218---- at its present location in the OPW National Monuments Depot, Killarney. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. A high cross on Sceilg Mhichíl, built in the early medieval period, likely between the 8th and 10th centuries, and associated with an early Christian monastic site dedicated to St Michael. The cross, now damaged, is significant as part of the island’s rich monastic heritage and as a rare surviving example of early Irish stone sculpture in such a remote setting.
