Cross in Sceilg Mhichíl

Cross

What is recorded here

Half a metre of rough stone, no taller than a knee, it stands on the Monks' Graveyard in Sceilg Mhichíl. Two rounded notches cut into opposite sides hint at a cross arm lost to time or deliberate breaking. The slab is thin, barely seven centimetres, as if someone struck it rather than chiselled it. Whatever it marked, the monks buried beside it stopped coming. The graveyard kept its shape. The cross lost its own.
Cross described in 1996 as follows; 'The rough stone slab stands on the Monks' Graveyard [KE104A001046-] and may be a defaced stone cross; H: 0.6m W: 0.24m T: 0.07m' (O'Sullivan and Sheehan 1996, 289, no. 948 (70)). There is a rounded notch on each side of this possible cross. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 948. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Revised by: Caimin O'Brien Date of revised upload: 10 March 2022
