What is recorded here
An anonymous stone cross stands in a monastery graveyard, its top broken away and only the rounded base remaining. The loss belongs to time rather than violence: time is the most common thief, stealing identity, shape and witness while leaving behind a stump that still points upward. What is missing can be imagined without inventing, because the visible fragment already records that something was made, set among graves and abandoned to rain.
Cross described in 1996 as follows; 'This poorly preserved stone cross stands on the Monks' Graveyard [KE104A001046-]. Its upper portion has broken off. H: 0.22m W: 0.35m T: 0.05m' (O'Sullivan and Sheehan 1996, 289, no. 948 (60)). The remaining lower portion of the cross features part of the arms with rounded angles.
The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 948. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
