Salterbridge House

Detached five-bay single-storey over basement gate lodge with dormer attic, extant 1841, on a rectangular plan originally three-bay single-storey on a symmetrical plan. Extended, pre-1904, producing present composition. Renovated, ----. Hipped slate roof with clay ridge tiles, cement rendered central chimney stack having concrete capping supporting terracotta pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods on slate flagged eaves retaining cast-iron downpipes. Part tuck pointed coursed or snecked rubble stone walls on battered base with drag edged cut-sandstone flush quoins to corners. Square-headed central door opening with sandstone ashlar voussoirs framing replacement timber boarded door. Square-headed flanking window openings with dragged cut-sandstone sills, and sandstone ashlar voussoirs framing replacement timber casement windows. Set back from line of road at entrance to grounds of Salterbridge House.

A gate lodge contributing positively to the group and setting values of the Salterbridge House estate with the architectural value of the composition suggested by such attributes as the compact plan form centred on a featureless doorcase; and the high pitched roofline: meanwhile, aspects of the composition, in particular a feint masonry break, clearly illustrate the continued linear development of the gate lodge in the later nineteenth century.
