Inchnagreeve

Inchnagreeve is a small, flat-topped mound at the southern end of Lough Croan in County Roscommon, marked on Ordnance Survey maps since at least 1837. The lough beside it is not reliably a lake at all; it sometimes dries out entirely, becoming a flat basin of reeds rather than open water. The mound was recorded under the same name on both the 1837 and 1915 editions of the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps, suggesting it was a recognised local landmark across generations, even as the water around it came and went with the seasons or the years. Whether the name Inchnagreeve, with its likely derivation from the Irish "inis" meaning an island or riverside land, reflects a time when the mound sat more reliably in water is the kind of question the landscape quietly poses without answering.
