Embanked enclosure

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Embanked enclosure is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Rooty, County Roscommon, Ireland. The 1837 Ordnance Survey map marked a D-shaped embanked enclosure measuring about 35 metres northeast-southwest and 30 metres northwest-southeast. A northeast-southwest road bank cuts through its southeast edge. The slight rise in the level landscape no longer shows the earthworks in pasture, although the site was probably a rath.
Marked only on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map as D-shaped embanked enclosure (ext. dims c. 35m NE-SW; c. 30m NW-SE) which is truncated by a NE-SW road bank at SE. Situated on a slight rise in a level landscape, it is not visible at ground level in pasture but it was probably a rath. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
