Half a metre of carved stone, the Rodanstown font dropped babies into cold water before climbing to heaven. Cogan saw it standing in the graveyard in the 1860s, but it has since wandered to Milltown near Kells, leaving behind a hollow octagonal shadow. Its chamfered panels still catch light like a small room built for drowning and birth.

The font Rodanstown graveyard (ME049-021001-) mentioned by Cogan (1862-70, 2, 359) is now at Milltown (ME017-036----) near Kells. It is octagonal (ext. dim. 0.6m; H 0.5m) with chamfered under- panels and has a circular, flat-bottomed basin (int. diam. 0.46m; D 0.15m). The font stands on an octagonal base with a moulding at the top (H 0.28m) (Roe 1968, 113). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 10 April, 2015
