Road

The site (Wth 1m; D 0.18m) consists of planks near the bottom of opposing drain faces. In one face, three planks are orientated NE-SW. To the SE in the opposing drain face, two more planks are similarly orientated, one of which is overlain by a third, almost perpendicular timber. To the NW of these timbers, a roundwood and a piece of brushwood, both worked, are recorded. It is possible that multiple layers are represented within the site. The timbers display a variety of conversions and three have been identified as oak. It is situated in moderately humified Sphagnum peat containing Eriophorum and fibrous roots and lies beneath a widespread stratigraphic change to poorly humified peat. It may be linked to SMR OF015-199---- 9.9m to the NW and SMR OF015-198---- c. 60m to the NW, both of which contain similar components and occur at a similar level in the peat. The site has been dendrochronologically dated to AD 594±9 or later (Q9287). An outlying plank at SMR OF015-260----, 29m to the W, has produced a comparable dendrochronological date and may also be related to this site.
